I finally did a video tour of my home layout, the Get Out n Push railroad.

  1. Saw your link on the Model Railroad Radio list. Great tour, I’m loving the wood fence scene, missing boards, etc. Very cool and realistic.

quick question, what are you using on the ground to build it up around buildings? I thought you said something about plaster work – is that just normal everyday plaster or Sculpt-a-mold ? I’m getting to the point where I have to ‘plant’ the buildings and build the ground.

If/when you get to that point on the new section, wanna do a video tutorial? 🙂

Keep up the great work, looking forward to updates.

  2. Thanks Jon. On the ground I placed the buildings first and then used Woodland Scenics ground foam and used it fairly thick (on the first section). I found out the hard way that this is not always the best way as thick layers of the ground foam tends to crack over time. Luckily I was able to touch this up with a little bit more.

On the newer section when I place the buildings I start with a flat piece of Masonite cut with about an inch around the building. I am doing this as I am keeping it in mind that this layout will be torn down eventually (a rental house) and I will be able to remove the building in one piece. To smooth up around the flat areas I used plaster of paris, of which I had a 25lb bag. This worked pretty well but sets fairly quickly. I recently tried Sculptamold and in the future will only be using the plaster for castings.
I will attempt to do a video of the process at some point, need to steal my wife’s tripod first 😉
